Recently, Moira Farming P/L hosted a group of young people who were part of the Australian Future Farmers Exchange Tour. We often host student groups; however, this group were different. 

In interacting with the students, it soon became obvious that all the students held a keen interest in the Agricultural sector for future employment in one way or another. From this stemmed a strong interest from the students through out their time on our property.

Moira Farming P/L recognises the importance that young people play in the future of the Agricultural Industry and see these visits as a way to facilitate interest in the agriculture sector and specifically demonstrating the role that our business plays within that sector. 

It was a pleasure to host the students from the Australian Future Farming Exchange Tour. As the tour progressed, the student’s interest and keenness became evident as did the dedication of the teaching staff. It was obvious that the teaching staff had gone above and beyond to give these young people an exceptional agricultural experience. For this reason, the normal farm tour that included an extensive investigation of all aspects of the farm, soon turned into a hands-on lesson in Computer Guided GPS technology with each student taking turns in driving and experiencing the operating system on a tractor first hand.     

I cannot emphasis enough the value of a program such as this to the Agriculture Sector. It involves getting the young people out of the classroom and into the businesses where our food and fibre are produced. This hands-on experience cannot be gained in a classroom setting. 

I highly commend the Australian Future Farming Exchange Tour program for the effort and energy that the organisers have put into the program, and we would welcome them again onto our farm in order to give these young people a glimpse of what we do on a day-to-day basis.
